Invention of the Game
Was it Abner Doubleday on a summer afternoon in 1839 in Cooperstown, New York? Or was it Alexander Cartwright Jr. and Daniel "Doc" Adams during the spring and summer of 1842?
Alexander Cartwright and Daniel Adams would create a formal set of rules that would change the game of Base Ball to what is today. They determined the following "rules":
- the infield should be shaped in a diamond ( it was a square )
- foul lines were defined ( everything used to be in play )
- first and third bases were set at 42 paces apart from each other
- batters got three missed swings before being called out
- pitchers were to throw the ball underhanded without bending the wrist or elbow
